About
The Nanxi River in Yongjia County north of Wenzhou, Zhejiang, is a national park famed for clear water, pebble shoals, riverside groves and old villages.
In 2004 China Post issued “Nanxi River”, four stamps: a lone sail in the distance, soaring peaks, exquisite hills and water, and green groves on the shoals.

It is in the second batch of national parks of China (national scenic areas) named by the State Council in 1988.
Travel tips
Getting there: the Nanxi River is in Yongjia County, Wenzhou. From central Wenzhou, a long-distance bus or a drive to the Yantou and Fenglin area takes one to one and a half hours. Wenzhou Longwan Airport and Wenzhou South station are the main entry points.
Old villages: along the river lie Yantou, Cangpo, Furong, Yubei and other old villages, mostly settlements dating from the Song and Yuan periods, with village walls, ancestral halls and old houses. They can be linked on one route.
Bamboo rafts: in summer you can float down the river on a bamboo raft. The water is clear and shallow with low hills on both sides; the level varies with rainfall.
Landscape: odd rocks such as Lion Rock and Mast Rock stand on either side of the river, reached by car or on foot, some distance apart.
Time: the villages plus a stretch of river make a tight day; staying a night suits a slower trip.
Season: summer is for rafting and swimming; spring and autumn are comfortable with good colour. In the plum-rain season around June there is heavy rain and the river rises, so take care.
Where to stay: Yantou, Fenglin and Furong have guesthouses and farmhouse inns of modest size; book ahead in holidays.
