Travel tips
Getting there: Mount Fozi is in Zhenghe county, Nanping, near Chouling village on provincial road 302. Reach Nanping or Zhenghe by rail, then continue by road. Local buses in the hills are infrequent, so a car or a chartered driver is easier.
Location: Mount Fozi is in Zhenghe county in northern Fujian, on the northern Jiufeng range. The area comprises Foziyan, Chouling, Meizikeng, Huangling and Qixing Gorge, with peaks, gorges and waterfalls.
What you do: The area is mostly forest, rock faces and temple paths. Most routes are on stone steps or mountain trails on foot.
Time: Half a day to a day covers one main route. If you link it with nearby sites, stay a night in Zhenghe town.
Season: Spring and autumn are mild, with frequent cloud and mist. Summer is humid with thunderstorms, and typhoons can affect the Fujian coast from July to September.
Where to stay: Lodging on and below the mountain is limited. Most visitors stay in a nearby county town and go in early.
Caution: Steps are slippery after rain, so wear shoes with grip and carry rain gear. Mobile signal in the hills is patchy; save the route offline.
