About

Mandarin Duck Creek (Yuanyangxi) lies 30 km from the Pingnan county seat in north-east Fujian, 79 km², China’s only reserve for the mandarin duck. The creek runs 14 km through deep forest where the ducks winter, so Pingnan is called the “home of the mandarin duck”. The area also has macaques and the Water Curtain Cave.

It is in the third batch of national parks of China (national scenic areas) named by the State Council in 1994.

Travel tips

Getting there: the reserve is in the northeast of Pingnan County, Ningde, about 30 km from the county seat. From Fuzhou or Ningde, go first to Pingnan town and then on by local transport or a hired car; driving along the expressway to the Pingnan exit is the most direct way.

What to see: the creek runs for about 14 km, with a path along the valley, waterfalls, a curtain cave and odd-shaped rocks.

Mandarin ducks: they winter here from late autumn to early spring. Wild ducks are shy; watch from a distance and do not chase them.

Nearby: Baishuiyang, a wide river bed of shallow flowing water in the same county, is not far away and is often visited on the same trip.

Time: half a day to a day for the creek; two days if you add Baishuiyang.

Season: spring and summer bring full streams and green hills; autumn and winter are the time to look for wintering ducks, with cold mornings in the hills.

Where to stay: hotels and guesthouses in Pingnan town and nearby villages; the county seat is the easiest base.

Note: rocks by the water are mossy and slippery after rain; wear shoes with grip. Mist is common and temperatures change quickly.
