About
In 2007 Forbes ranked Shanghai the 10th most crowded city in the world.
Travel tips
Getting there: Pudong International and Hongqiao are the two main airports; from Pudong the maglev takes about 8 minutes to Longyang Road, where you change to the metro, and Hongqiao combines an airport and the high-speed Hongqiao station. Shanghai and Shanghai South stations also have trains. The metro is the easiest way around the city, supplemented by taxis.
The Bund and Pudong: the Bund runs along the Huangpu River, lined with former banks and customs buildings from the concession era; across the river Lujiazui has the Oriental Pearl Tower and Shanghai Tower. Ferries cross the river, and the lights on both banks are best at night.
Old city and shopping streets: Yu Garden and the City God Temple area are the old walled town; Nanjing Road pedestrian street leads to the Bund; Huaihai Road and Hengshan Road in the former French Concession have plane trees and old villas and are good for walking.
Museums: Shanghai Museum on People's Square holds bronzes, paintings and calligraphy; the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum, the China Art Museum and various specialist museums are also worth a visit.
Nearby towns: Zhujiajiao, in the western suburbs, is a water town reachable in a day; Suzhou, Hangzhou, Wuxi and Nanjing are half an hour to an hour and a half away by high-speed train, suitable for day trips or overnight stays.
Time: three days cover the main sights in the city; add one or two for Zhujiajiao, Suzhou or Hangzhou.
Season: spring and autumn are most comfortable, March to May and October to November. Summer is hot and humid with plum rains and typhoons; winter is damp and cold, with little snow.
Where to stay: the Bund, People's Square and Nanjing Road areas suit first-time visitors; Huaihai Road and Jing'an are quieter with more restaurants; hotels near Pudong airport help with early flights.
