About
The Shengsi Islands, the northernmost of the Zhoushan archipelago off Zhejiang, are a national park of islands, beaches and fishing villages at the mouth of Hangzhou Bay.
It is in the second batch of national parks of China (national scenic areas) named by the State Council in 1988.
Travel tips
Getting there: the Shengsi Islands are in the north of the Zhoushan archipelago and there is no bridge, so you need a boat. Passenger boats run from Luchaogang and Shenjiawan in Shanghai's Nanhui to the main island; the crossing takes between one and two and a half hours depending on the boat.
Booking: tickets are tight in high season and holidays, so book ahead. Boats stop in strong winds and typhoons, so leave slack in your plans.
Main islands: the main island, Sijiao Mountain, has Jihu Beach and South Changtu Beach, which are used for summer swimming. Gouqi and Huaniao Islands are farther out and need another boat.
Seafood: fishing is well developed, and fresh seafood is available at the harbours and small restaurants.
Time: stay at least one night on the main island; allow two or three days to go to Gouqi or Huaniao.
Season: summer is the main season and the water is warm enough. July to September is typhoon season with changeable weather. Autumn is more settled and quieter.
Where to stay: Caiyuan town and the main beaches have hotels and guesthouses, which are tight in the summer high season, so book early.
