The best-known sight of Luoyang is the Longmen Grottoes.
Travel tips
Getting there: Luoyang Longmen is the high-speed station, on the Zhengzhou-Xi'an line; Luoyang Beijiao airport has domestic flights. Luoyang station is the city's largest conventional station. Buses, a metro and taxis connect the main sights.
Longmen Grottoes: about 12 km south of the city on both banks of the Yi River; the great Vairocana Buddha of Fengxian Temple is on the west bank. Allow half a day.
White Horse Temple: about 21 km east of the old town, the first temple built after Buddhism reached China, with the Jin-dynasty Qiyun Pagoda in its grounds.
Old town: Lijing Gate and the Luoyang Museum suit an evening walk. The Yingtian Gate and Mingtang-Tiantang sites of the Sui-Tang city are in the urban area, with a site museum.
Nearby: Guanlin Temple, in the south, is said to hold the head of Guan Yu; the Mangshan hills have an ancient tombs museum.
Beyond the city: the Shaolin Temple is at Dengfeng; Yuntaishan and Shennongshan are in Jiaozuo, with Wangwushan nearby.
Time: Longmen, White Horse Temple and the museums take two days; add a third for Shaolin.
Season: peonies bloom in April; autumn is pleasant; summer is hot.
Where to stay: the old town or near Luoyang Longmen station, about 20 minutes apart by car.
