About
Fencheng, in the west of Xiangfen County, Linfen, Shanxi, is a Historic and Cultural Town of China. It was the seat of Taiping County; when Taiping and Xiangling counties were merged into Xiangfen in 1954 the county seat moved away, and the old town kept its layout.

More than forty old buildings survive. From north to south they include the City God Temple, the Confucian Temple, the Drum Tower, a brick pagoda in front of the school, the main hall of the yamen, the Guandi Temple, the Altar of Land and Grain Temple, Hongji Bridge and the town wall, dating from the Jin to the end of the Qing. Together they form the “Fencheng Ancient Building Complex”, a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level.
What makes Fencheng rare is its completeness: nearly every building an old county town needed — the yamen where officials governed, and the City God Temple, Confucian Temple, Altar of Land and Grain and Guandi Temple for worship — is still there, in its original place. Most county towns have been rebuilt many times, and few keep such a full set; here one can see how an old county town was laid out and how local government worked.

Xiangfen County also has the Palaeolithic Dingcun site and the Taosi site, both Major Historical and Cultural Sites Protected at the National Level.
