About
Danjiangkou Reservoir (丹江口水库风景名胜区) is a national park of China (ninth batch, designated by the State Council in 2017), located in Danjiangkou, Shiyan, Hubei.
The area is in Danjiangkou, Shiyan, in northwest Hubei, and consists of the Hubei part of the Danjiangkou Reservoir with its islands and mountainous shores. The reservoir was made by damming the Han River where the Dan River joins it and spans Hubei and Henan; the Hubei side is known as Canglang Sea.
Construction of the Danjiangkou Dam began in 1958 and finished in 1973; it was later raised, bringing the normal water level to 170 m and the water surface to over 1,000 sq km. The reservoir is the source of the middle route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project. It is deeply indented with many islands, and most of the old city of Junzhou lies under water.
Mount Wudang, a World Heritage site, is also near Danjiangkou but is a separate attraction, often visited on the same trip.
Travel tips
From Wuhan take a high-speed train to Shiyan and then a local connection to Danjiangkou, about 4 hours in all; about an hour from Shiyan city. A day is enough, with boat trips on the lake. Any season works, spring and autumn best. The reservoir is a water-source protection zone, so keep to the rules and take rubbish away.
