About

Taihang Grand Canyon (太行大峡谷风景名胜区) is a national park of China (eighth batch, designated by the State Council in 2012), located in Luluo Town, Xindu District, Xingtai, Hebei.

The area lies on the eastern side of the central Taihang Mountains and centres on the Xingtai Grand Canyon (the Xingtai canyon group), about 70 km from Xingtai city; across the ridge to the west is Heshun County in Shanxi. It was part of Xingtai County until 2020, when Luluo Town became part of Xindu District.

The group has 24 canyons, eight of them over 1 km long, cut mainly in red quartz sandstone; the gorges are narrow and steep-walled, with waterfalls in the rainy season that freeze in winter. Five are open to visitors: Changzui, Liushui, Huangchao, Zhuhui and Laoren; Huangchao is barely one person wide at its narrowest, while Laoren is the gentlest.

Several places in the Taihang Mountains, in Hebei, Henan and Shanxi, are called "Taihang Grand Canyon" or "Taihang Mountain Grand Canyon". The one on the State Council's list of national parks is this one at Xingtai.

Travel tips

About an hour and a half by car from Xingtai city on the mountain roads to the west. One or two canyons take most of a day. Spring brings peach and apricot blossom, summer is cool, and autumn is the season for persimmons and chestnuts; paths in the gorges are narrow with many steps, so wear shoes with good grip. Yingtan, a nearby village built of red stone, can be visited on the same trip.
