About

The Wu River gorges at Yanhe in north-east Guizhou are a national park of deep limestone canyons on the Wu River, home of the Tujia people.

The Wu River runs more than 130 km through Yanhe County between steep cliffs and is known as the Wujiang Gallery. Its five gorges in the county are Jiashi, Lizhi, Yintong, Tutuo and Wangtuo.

Old river towns along it include Qitan, Siqu and Hongdu. The Mayanghe National Nature Reserve, on the border of Yanhe and Wuchuan counties, mainly protects the François' langur.

It is in the seventh batch of national parks of China (national scenic areas) named by the State Council in 2009.

Main sights

Lizhi Gorge: downstream of the county town and the first to be developed, now an AAAA tourist attraction. Boats run about 20 km (40 minutes) from the town pier to Siqu. Bawang Valley beside the gorge has a scenic road and walkways.

Siqu: an old town on the Wu River below Lizhi Gorge, where the boats end.

Hongdu: an old town in the north of the county, next to Gongtan in Youyang, Chongqing; boats between Gongtan and Yanhe began in October 2025.

Travel tips

Getting there: Yanhe Tujia Autonomous County is in Tongren, Guizhou. From Chongqing or Tongren go by bus to Yanhe town, about three to four hours, with Chongqing being nearer. Yanhe has no high-speed rail, so drive or take a coach.

What you do: The main attraction is the Wujiang gorge. Cliffs stand steep on both sides, and boats pass through the gorge. The water is calm.

Tujia culture: Yanhe is home to the Tujia people, and you can learn about their costume, houses, singing and dance.

Time: A boat trip takes half a day to a day. With the area around town it is about two days.

Season: Spring and autumn are best. Summer is hot; winter is damp and cold, with fog on the river.

Where to stay: Yanhe town is the most convenient.

Nearby: Mount Fanjing in Tongren lies to the east, and Wulong and Pengshui in Chongqing to the north.

Caution: Wear a life jacket on boats. The gorge is windy, so bring a jacket. Mountain roads are winding; drive slowly.
