About
Mount Huxing in Longhui County, Hunan, is a national park of mountain scenery and the home of the Huayao, a branch of the Yao people known for their flowered dress and embroidery.
It is in the seventh batch of national parks of China (national scenic areas) named by the State Council in 2009.
Travel tips
Getting there: Mount Huxing lies in the north-western hills of Longhui County, Shaoyang, Hunan. Go to Shaoyang or Changsha, take a bus to Longhui town, then a bus or charter car into the mountains, two to three hours on winding roads.
The Huayao: The Huayao, a branch of the Yao, wear brightly coloured costume, and cross-stitch embroidery is a local craft. Villages sit high in the mountains, where you can see houses and handicrafts.
Scenery: The area has tall hills, deep forest, terraces and sea of cloud, with views toward the Xuefeng Mountains from high points.
Time: A day covers the main villages. To learn more about local customs, stay a night.
Season: Summer is cool and autumn clear. Snow and ice may close roads in winter.
Where to stay: A few farm lodgings in the hills are simple. The county town has more.
Culture: The Huayao have their own festivals, such as Taoliaogui, with singing and dancing.
Caution: Roads are narrow and steep; drive slowly. Ask before photographing people, and respect local custom.
