About
Chongqing lies in the eastern Sichuan basin where the Jialing joins the Yangtze, among hills and frequent fog, hence “Mountain City” and “Fog Capital”; its short name is Yu. On 14 March 1997 it became China’s fourth municipality.
Travel tips
Getting there: Jiangbei airport connects by rail transit. Chongqing North, West and East are the main high-speed stations, and high-speed trains link Chongqing and Chengdu. Within the city there is a metro, including monorail lines 2 and 3, plus cable cars; the monorail passing through a residential block at Liziba is itself a sight.
City centre: Jiefangbei, Hongyadong, Chaotianmen, the Yangtze cableway and the night views along the Jialing and Yangtze rivers are all on the Yuzhong peninsula and can be linked in a day. The city is hilly with many steps and slopes; wear comfortable shoes.
Ciqikou and Gele hills: Ciqikou old town and revolutionary sites such as Hongyan village and Zhazidong are in Shapingba district, each needing half a day.
Dazu Rock Carvings: in Dazu district west of the city centre, with a high-speed station at Dazu South. Baodingshan is about 15 km north-east of Dazu town and Beishan about 1.5 km north of it; both can be seen in a day.
Three Gorges: cruises run downstream from Chaotianmen to Yichang over several days, passing Fengdu, Yunyang, Baidicheng, Qutang, Wu and Xiling gorges.
Wulong: Wulong Karst, a natural World Heritage site, lies south-east of the city, with the Three Natural Bridges, Furong Cave and Fairy Mountain, which has an airport.
Time: two to three days for the city, plus one each for Dazu or Wulong.
Season: spring and autumn are better; summer is hot and humid, winter damp, cold and often misty.
Food: hotpot, noodles and local-style dishes are the main fare.
Where to stay: Jiefangbei and Hongyadong are most convenient; the area around Chongqing North station is another option.
