About

Zunyi, in northern Guizhou backed by the Dalou Mountains, is the main city of the north of the province and one of the first National Famous Historical and Cultural Cities. Under the Tang it was the prefecture of Bozhou, which the Yang family then ruled as hereditary chieftains for more than seven hundred years until they were put down in the Wanli reign of the Ming, when Bozhou became Zunyi Prefecture.

Hailongtun, north of the city, is the mountain-top fortress of the Yang chieftains, its passes and walls built along the cliffs; it is a component of the World Cultural Heritage site of the Tusi Sites. South of the city, the Tomb of Yang Can, a Southern Song chieftain of Bozhou, and his wife is filled with finely carved stone figures and patterns and is a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level. In 1935 the Red Army held the Zunyi Conference here during the Long March; the meeting place is in the old town.

Chishui, within Zunyi, has large areas of red-sandstone danxia landscape and waterfalls that are part of the China Danxia World Natural Heritage site; Maotai town in Renhuai, on the Chishui River, is famous for its liquor.

Travel tips

Getting there: Zunyi Xinzhou Airport is east of the city; high-speed trains run to Zunyi station.

Sightseeing: Hailongtun takes half a day; Chishui and Maotai are farther away and need separate trips.
