The Shiqian Hot Springs in north-east Guizhou are a national park built around a group of natural hot springs in use since the Ming dynasty, with the Tang-dynasty Yaoshan Chan temple nearby.
It is in the seventh batch of national parks of China (national scenic areas) named by the State Council in 2009.
Travel tips
Getting there: Shiqian is in Tongren, Guizhou. From Tongren (which has Tongren South station and Fenghuang Airport) or Guiyang go by bus to Shiqian town, two to three hours. Driving is more convenient.
Hot springs: Shiqian is nicknamed the home of hot springs in China. The springs lie around the county town, mostly at hotels and bathhouses, and the local tea is a regional specialty.
Fodingshan: Mount Foding has forest and a nature reserve, with hiking, and is a cool retreat in summer.
Loushang old village: The old village has timber buildings of the Ming and Qing dynasties, open to visitors.
Time: Hot springs and the old village take a day; adding Mount Foding takes two days.
Season: Autumn and winter are most pleasant for bathing. Summer is cool on the mountain; spring is rainy.
Where to stay: The town and hot-spring area have many hotels, most with spring water.
Caution: Do not soak for too long, and take care if you have heart disease or high blood pressure. Drive slowly on mountain roads.
