About
Baishui Cave (白水洞风景名胜区) is a national park of China (eighth batch, designated by the State Council in 2012), located in Yantang Town, Xinshao County, Shaoyang, Hunan.
The scenic area lies around Baishui Village in Yantang Town, Xinshao County, Shaoyang, and centres on the Baishuidong gorge and the Bailong cave. It became a national scenic area in 2012 and a national geopark in 2017.
Bailong cave is a natural limestone cave with features such as the Nantian Pillar, a great curtain and an underwater-world section, and fossils of giant pandas and stegodons have been found there. The gorge has a reservoir lake between high cliffs, springs and falls, and a narrow gap known as Yixiantian; cultural sites include Baishui old courtyard, Liangyi Temple, ancestral halls and memorial arches.
Travel tips
About an hour by car from Shaoyang and about three hours from Changsha. Allow a day. Summer is cool; the cave is damp and paths have steps, so wear shoes with grip.
