About

Langshan, in Xinning County in south-west Hunan, is a large Danxia landform area of 110 km² in six parts: Zixiadong, the Fuyi River, Chilli Peak, Tianyixiang, the Natural Bridge and Bajiaozhai.

Its character is mountains, water, forest and caves. The main sights are the natural bridge, said to be the largest in Asia, General Rock on the Fuyi River, the “whales in the sea” of Bajiaozhai, Camel Peak and Chilli Peak. The climate is mild, averaging about 16 °C.

It is in the fourth batch of national parks of China (national scenic areas) named by the State Council in 2002.

Travel tips

Getting there: Langshan lies near the town of Xinning, which has no railway station. Go first to Shaoyang, take a bus to Xinning, then a local bus or taxi to the individual areas. The six areas are far apart, so a car or a hired car is convenient.

Bajiaozhai: in the north of the area, near the border with Guangxi. From the top you look down on the cluster of red peaks called the Whales Playing in the Sea. The steps are steep; allow two to three hours up and down.

Fuyi River: bamboo rafts drift down the river past General Rock and other riverside sights.

Tianyi Lane: a long, narrow slot between cliffs; at its narrowest one person can just pass sideways.

Chili Pepper Peak and the Natural Bridge: Chili Pepper Peak is seen from below or from viewpoints opposite; the Natural Bridge is reached by a walk on mountain paths.

Time: allow two to three days for the main areas.

Season: spring and autumn are best; summer is hot and rainy, and some paths may close after heavy rain.

Where to stay: in Xinning town, or in village guesthouses around Bajiaozhai and Langshan town.
