About

Mount Wanfo (“Ten Thousand Buddhas”) in Tongdao County, south-west Hunan, is a Danxia landform of pillar peaks, and the Dong villages around it with their drum towers and wind-and-rain bridges form a national park with it.

It is in the seventh batch of national parks of China (national scenic areas) named by the State Council in 2009.

Travel tips

Getting there: Mount Wanfo and the Dong villages are in Tongdao Dong Autonomous County, Huaihua, Hunan. Go first to Huaihua, which has a high-speed station, then by bus to Tongdao, two to three hours. Buses also reach Tongdao from Guilin in Guangxi and Liping in Guizhou.

Mount Wanfo: The mountain is near Tongdao town. Its red sandstone forms a forest of peaks, with paths and viewing platforms.

Dong villages: Yutou village and Huangdu Dong cultural village are among the better-known villages, with drum towers, wind-and-rain bridges and timber houses.

Time: Half a day for the mountain and half to a full day for the villages, so one to two days in all.

Season: Spring and autumn are best. Summer is hot and rainy, and winter damp and cold. Dong festivals cluster around the lunar new year.

Where to stay: Tongdao town is the most convenient; some villages have homestays.

Culture: Dong grand song, the lusheng pipes and drum-tower singing are traditions that can be heard in the villages.

Nearby: Sanjiang and Guilin in Guangxi lie to the south, and the Dong country around Liping in Guizhou to the west.

Caution: Paths are slippery after rain. In villages do not photograph inside houses, and respect residents.
