Travel tips

Getting there: Weng'an is in Qiannan, Guizhou. From Guiyang it is about two hours by bus or car to Weng'an town, and the Jiangjie River is not far beyond.

Jiangjie River Bridge: The Jiangjie River Bridge, a truss-arch bridge completed in 1995, spans the Wu River. The valley is deep, and you can view it from the bridgehead and the riverbank.

What you do: Paths and viewpoints follow the river. The scenery is gorge, cliff and water, and boat trips are possible.

Houchang meeting site: The site of the 1935 Houchang meeting of the Long March is in Weng'an and can be visited on the way.

Time: Half a day to a day; adding the Houchang site makes it a day.

Season: Spring and autumn are best. Summer is hot and rainy, and winter is damp.

Where to stay: Weng'an town is the most convenient.

Caution: It is windy by the bridge; do not climb the railings. Wear a life jacket on boats, and drive slowly on winding roads.
