About
The Mount Longmen scenic area spans Pengzhou, Shifang and Mianzhu in Sichuan, over 1,900 km² with its core in Pengzhou. Its sights are groups of “flying peaks” (klippen), peak clusters and caves and Danxia landforms; the klippen, formed as glacial erratics, are of scientific interest.
It is in the fifth batch of national parks of China (national scenic areas) named by the State Council in 2004.
Travel tips
Getting there: the core area is in Pengzhou. From Chengdu take the metro or a long-distance bus to Pengzhou, about an hour, then a local bus towards Longmenshan town, Yinchanggou or Bailu, about another hour. By car from Chengdu it takes about two hours.
Layout: the area is large and spreads across Pengzhou, Shifang and Mianzhu, with sights far apart, so choose one part rather than trying to see it all. On the Pengzhou side the main places are Longmenshan town, the Flying Peaks and Yinchanggou.
The Flying Peaks: around Longmenshan town, huge boulders carried by glaciers lie scattered in the valley and can be reached by road and path.
Yinchanggou: a gorge with a stream, waterfalls and forest paths, cooler than Chengdu in summer, with lodging at its mouth.
Time: one day for one area; two or three days to see two or three areas.
Season: summer for the cool air, autumn for red leaves, spring for azaleas and wildflowers. In winter the high ground has snow and roads may be closed.
Where to stay: guesthouses and hotels in Longmenshan town, at the mouth of Yinchanggou and in Bailu town; they fill up on summer weekends, so book early.
Caution: the mountains get heavy rain, and rockfalls and flash floods can follow. Roads were rebuilt in places after the 2008 earthquake, so check conditions on the spot.
