About
Fenghuang Ancient Town (凤凰风景名胜区) is a national park of China (eighth batch, designated by the State Council in 2012), located in Fenghuang County, Xiangxi Prefecture, Hunan.
The scenic area lies in Fenghuang County, Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, and centres on Fenghuang ancient town on the Tuo River, with the Southern Great Wall, Huangsiqiao ancient fort and Qiliang Cave around it.
The town was a military base in western Hunan in the Ming and Qing periods, and keeps gate towers, old streets and stilted houses along the river. The writer Shen Congwen was born and raised here and his former home is in the town. The Southern Great Wall is a border wall built to guard the Miao areas, and Huangsiqiao is a stone fort on it. Most residents are Miao and Tujia.
Travel tips
Take the fast train to Jishou and then about an hour by road; about three hours by road from Zhangjiajie. Allow one to two days. Spring and autumn are suitable and holidays are crowded; riverside stone paths are slippery when wet.
