About
Taohuayuan, in Changde, Hunan, on the lower Yuan River, takes its name from Tao Yuanming’s “Record of the Peach Blossom Land”. The scenic area covers 158 km², with a core of 16 km² and 44 km² of water on the Wuling fishing river; its sights are hills, caves, waters, old gardens, wildlife and inscriptions.
It is in the fifth batch of national parks of China (national scenic areas) named by the State Council in 2004.
Travel tips
Getting there: Taohuayuan is in Taoyuan county, Changde, about 40 km from the city. Changde has a railway station and Changde Taohuayuan Airport. From Changsha, trains or coaches take a little over an hour, and then a road leads to Taoyuan and the park.
Layout: the park consists of Peach Blossom Hill, Taoyuan Hill and the Qin Village. The main area is about 16 sq km, and the nearby stretch of the Yuan River is also part of the scenic area.
Walking: paths run through the gardens to a stele of the Peach Blossom Spring story, the ancient Qin cave and the Peach Blossom temple, which correspond to Tao Yuanming's description.
On the water: boats run around Wuling Yuchuan for views of the Yuan River.
Time: half a day to a day for the garden, and two days with the river.
Season: the peach blossom in March and April is the busiest time. Summer is hot, and autumn and winter are quiet.
Where to stay: Taoyuan town and the park area have hotels, and Changde has more, where most visitors stay.
Nearby: Zhangjiajie is easy to reach from Changde, and the two can be linked in one route.
Getting there
Taoyuan County can be reached by water via the Yuan River and Dongting Lake from Yueyang; it is 30 km from Changde Taohuayuan airport and 40 km from Changde railway station.
