About
Nanshan in Chengbu County, south-west Hunan, is a national park of high alpine grassland, “the pasture in the clouds”.
It is in the seventh batch of national parks of China (national scenic areas) named by the State Council in 2009.
Travel tips
Getting there: Mount Nan is in Chengbu Miao Autonomous County, Shaoyang, Hunan. Go to Shaoyang, or approach from Guilin in Guangxi or Huaihua in Hunan, by bus to Chengbu town, then change or charter a car up to the mountain. Roads are winding, and driving yourself is the most flexible.
Scenery: The area is high meadow and pasture, with wind turbines, cattle and sheep and wide views.
What you do: You tour the grassland by car or on foot along paths and viewpoints, and can add a visit to nearby Miao villages.
Time: One day covers the main grassland. For sunrise and sunset, stay a night on the mountain.
Season: Summer is cool and a good escape from the heat. Winter brings rime and snow, and roads may ice over. Spring and autumn have a large day-night range.
Where to stay: The pasture has a few guesthouses; the county town has more.
Culture: Miao and Dong communities hold traditional festivals here, with song gatherings around the sixth day of the sixth lunar month.
Caution: It is windier and colder than the valley. Drive slowly in fog, and carry anti-slip equipment in winter.
