About
The Yueyang Tower–Dongting Lake scenic area is in Yueyang, Hunan, and was in the second batch of national scenic areas in 1988. At its centre are Yueyang Tower on the west gate of the old city and Dongting Lake in front of it, with Junshan Island in the lake; it also takes in several other areas such as South Lake and the Miluo River.
Fan Zhongyan’s Song-dynasty essay “On Yueyang Tower” describes the lake as seen from the tower, and a well-known couplet pairs the two as the finest water and the finest tower under heaven.
Travel tips
Getting there: Yueyang East Station is on the Beijing–Guangzhou high-speed line; take a bus or taxi to the tower. Boats to Junshan Island leave from piers near the tower.
Time: a day for the tower and Junshan Island.
