About
Tanzhang Gorge (潭獐峡风景名胜区) is a national park of China (eighth batch, designated by the State Council in 2012), located in Southeastern Wanzhou District, Chongqing, Chongqing.
The scenic area lies in the southeast of Wanzhou District, Chongqing, and is made up of limestone gorges. The name means roughly 'pool and roe-deer gorge', after the many pools and the roe deer once seen here.
Five main gorges (Jiangjun, Tianwang, Taoyuan, Difeng and Haluo) are joined by more than twenty side gorges. They run from about 100 m wide to only 1.5 m at the narrowest, with streams, pools and small waterfalls under forested slopes.
Travel tips
Allow one to two hours by road from Wanzhou. Half a day to a full day covers the main gorges. Spring and summer have the most water and greenery, and summer is cool; steps in the gorges are slippery, so wear shoes with good grip and avoid the gorges after heavy rain.
