About

Mount Taibai, 3,767 m, is the highest peak of the Qinling range and of eastern China, on the border of Mei, Taibai and Zhouzhi counties in Shaanxi, with alpine lakes and glacial relics. Several explorers have gone missing in its primeval forest.

Since 2018 the Taibaishan National Nature Reserve has banned the Ao–Tai traverse (from Mount Ao to Mount Taibai); visitors may only use the tourist routes set by the reserve, and those entering without permission can be fined. Check the reserve’s rules before going.

Mount Taibai is the highest peak of the Qinling Mountains; its summit, Baxian Tai, at 3,771.2 m, is the highest point in eastern mainland China. Snow can still be seen on the summit in summer, and “Taibai snow in the sixth month” is one of the Eight Views of Guanzhong.

Main sights

Baxian Tai: the summit of Mount Taibai, 3,771.2 m, with the ruins of temples.

Daye Hai, Erye Hai and Sanye Hai: alpine lakes near the summit, cirque lakes left by Quaternary glaciers.

Tangyu: the town of Tangyu in Mei County, on the northern side, is the main entrance, with hot springs.

Cableways: there are two. The Tianxia cableway runs from Honghuaping to Tianyuan Difang (about 3,511 m); the Fuyunge cableway runs from Xiabansi to Shangbansi.

Geology and landscape

Around the summit are cirques, horns, glacial lakes and other traces of Quaternary glaciation.

From foot to summit, climate and vegetation change clearly with altitude: deciduous broadleaf forest, mixed broadleaf and conifer forest, conifer forest, then alpine scrub and meadow.

Wildlife and plants

The Taibaishan National Nature Reserve is home to the giant panda, golden snub-nosed monkey and takin, and to alpine plants such as the Taibai larch.

Stamps

The fourth stamp of 2024-12 “Qinling Mountains”, a set of nine issued in 2024, shows snow on Mount Taibai.
