Great Locust Tree Ancestral Park, Hongtong 山西洪洞大槐树
The Great Locust Tree Ancestral Park, north of the county town of Hongtong, commemorates the migrations of the Ming. In the early Ming large numbers of people were moved out of Shanxi to other regions, and tradition holds that many set out from beneath a great locust tree here. A widely known folk rhyme says, “Where are my ancestors from? The great locust tree of Hongtong, Shanxi,” and many families come here to trace their roots and honor their ancestors.
