At the western foot of Ta'er Hill in Xiangfen County, the Taosi Site is a large walled city of the Longshan period, more than 4,000 years old. Excavations found city walls, a palace area, large tombs and a structure thought to have been used to observe sunrise and fix the seasons. Many scholars link it with the legendary capital of Yao.
