Famous grottoes
- The three great grottoes of China are:
- Mogao Caves, Dunhuang
- Longmen Grottoes, Luoyang
- Yungang Grottoes, Datong
Other famous grottoes include the Maijishan Grottoes and the Dazu Rock Carvings.
Stamps
- In 1988 China Post issued the definitive set R24 “Grotto Art of China”, four stamps:
- (1) 2 yuan, Yungang: Northern Wei great Buddha (30 Nov 1988)
- (2) 5 yuan, Longmen: Tang guardian (10 Aug 1988)
- (3) 10 yuan, Maijishan: Western Wei bodhisattva (15 Oct 1988)
- (4) 20 yuan, Dazu: Song girl feeding chickens (20 Oct 1988)
In 2008 China Post issued 2008-16 “Murals of the Kucha Grottoes”, four stamps: a bodhisattva, a guardian king, flying apsaras and Maitreya preaching.
