About
Dujiangyan, on the Min River west of the city, is a large irrigation system begun around 250 BC by Li Bing, governor of Shu for the state of Qin, and his son, and still in use today.
In 1991 China Post issued “Dujiangyan Irrigation Works”, three stamps: the Fish Mouth levee, the Flying Sand weir and the Bottle-Neck channel.

The system has three parts: the Fish Mouth divides the Min River into inner and outer channels; the Flying Sand Weir spills floodwater and silt back into the outer channel; and the Bottle Neck controls how much water enters the inner channel.
Erwang Temple honours Li Bing and his son. Founded in the Southern and Northern dynasties as the Chongde Shrine, it took its present name after a Qing rebuilding.
Fulong Temple dates from the Jin dynasty and took its name in the early Northern Song. It houses a stone statue of Li Bing carved in 168 AD and found in the river in 1974, 2.9 m tall and weighing 4.5 tonnes, with an inscription on the chest.
It is part of the Mount Qingcheng–Dujiangyan scenic area, in the first batch of national parks of China (national scenic areas) named by the State Council in 1982.
Travel tips
Dujiangyan: a walk along the river takes in the three main works, the Fish Mouth, the Flying Sand Weir and the Bottle Neck, as well as Erwang Temple, the Anlan rope bridge and the Lidui hill. Allow about half a day on foot.
