About
Huguangyan at Zhanjiang, Guangdong, is an ancient volcanic crater lake (maar) with the Song-dynasty Lengyan Temple.
It is in the fifth batch of national parks of China (national scenic areas) named by the State Council in 2004.
Travel tips
Getting there: Huguangyan is in the Mazhang district of Zhanjiang, about 18 km from the city, with buses and taxis. Zhanjiang has an airport and high-speed rail, and trains run from Guangzhou and Shenzhen to Zhanjiang West.
Layout: the centre is the maar lake, a round lake formed by a volcanic explosion, with clear water and volcanic landforms around it. There are also the Lengyan Temple and pavilions by the shore.
Walking: a path runs round the lake, with viewing points on the shore. On the east shore is the Lengyan Temple, said to have been founded in the Sui dynasty.
Geology: the area is also a geopark, with exhibits on volcanic geology that explain how the maar lake formed.
Time: half a day to a day.
Season: Zhanjiang is hot and humid, with typhoons and thunderstorms in summer. Winter is cool and pleasant for a visit.
Where to stay: Zhanjiang city has the most hotels, and there are some near the park. Most visitors stay in town and return the same day.
Nearby: Zhanjiang's mangroves, Naozhou Island and the Beibu Gulf coast are also worth a detour.
