About
Mount Yuntai lies between Lianyungang and the coast in Jiangsu. Once an island, it joined the mainland in the early Qing; it is famous as the Flower and Fruit Mountain with its Water Curtain Cave described in the novel Journey to the West.
It is in the second batch of national parks of China (national scenic areas) named by the State Council in 1988.
Travel tips
Getting there: Huaguoshan lies southeast of central Lianyungang. High-speed and conventional trains serve Lianyungang station and Lianyungang East station; a city bus reaches the scenic area in half an hour to an hour.
Going up: the park has cable cars and walking paths. The main sights are scattered in the mountains; from the gate, a path passes the Water Curtain Cave and Sanyuan Temple, and Yunu Peak is the highest point.
Water Curtain Cave: this is the home of the Monkey King in Journey to the West. In reality it is a cave and waterfall in a stream gully, with very little water in the dry season.
Time: a day is comfortable for Huaguoshan; add half a day for Lian Island and the seashore.
Season: spring and autumn are best. Summer is humid and rainy and hot in the hills; winter shows the mountains but fewer activities run.
Caution: there are monkeys, so do not carry food in the open and do not feed them, to avoid snatching.
Where to stay: central Lianyungang has many hotels, and a few are at the foot of the mountain; most people stay in the city.
