About
The Jiaodong Peninsula coastal scenic area in north-east Shandong includes Yantai, Penglai, Weihai, Chengshantou and the islands of Changshan, Heishan, Miao and Liugong, with beaches, sea-cut landforms and historic sites.
It is in the second batch of national parks of China (national scenic areas) named by the State Council in 1988.
Travel tips
Getting there: sights on the Jiaodong coast are scattered. Yantai and Weihai have high-speed stations, and Penglai and Rongcheng are served by long-distance buses or intercity rail. Yantai Penglai International Airport is in Penglai, and Weihai also has an airport.
Penglai Pavilion: it stands on Mount Dan above the north of Penglai city. The Penglai Water City next to it is the site of an ancient naval base. The two can be visited together in half a day.
Changdao: boats run from Penglai port to Changdao in about half an hour, and the island has sea-eroded landforms and beaches. Service may stop in fog or strong wind.
Weihai and Liugong Island: Liugong Island has the Sino-Japanese War of 1894-95 memorial museum. Boats from Weihai port take twenty to thirty minutes, and the island can be explored on foot.
Chengshantou: it is in Rongcheng, at the eastern tip of the Shandong Peninsula, with a cliff coast and wide views. It is more than an hour's drive from central Weihai.
Mirages: mirages occasionally appear at Penglai, mostly after rain in spring and summer, but they are irregular and not a reason to plan a trip.
Time: Penglai, Weihai and Chengshantou each need at least half a day; combining several takes three to four days.
Season: summer is cool by the sea and is high season; spring and autumn are good for visiting. In winter the sea wind is cold and fewer boats run.
Penglai
Penglai is famous for mirages; its Water City is a well-preserved ancient naval base. On the summit of Danya Hill north-west of it stands the Penglai Pavilion, one of the four great towers of China.
The fourth stamp of the 1987 set T121 “Famous Towers of China” shows the Penglai Pavilion.

Weihai
Liugong Island at Weihai is a maritime stronghold where the Beiyang Fleet had its base.
Chengshantou
Chengshantou, the easternmost point of the Shandong Peninsula, also called “the end of the sky”, has a cliff coast.
