About
Yantai, in the north-east of the Shandong Peninsula between the Yellow Sea to the north and the Bohai Sea to the west, is a National Famous Historical and Cultural City. Under the Ming, beacon towers were built on the hills by the sea against the Japanese pirates, and “Yantai” — beacon terrace — takes its name from them. When the port opened in modern times, foreign consulates were built on Yantai Hill, and these Western buildings survive. See also Cities of China.
Penglai Pavilion is at Penglai within Yantai, and the Changdao islands offshore are beautiful; the whole area lies within the national scenic area of the Jiaodong Peninsula Coast. Yantai was the first place in China to make modern wine and has many wineries around it, so it is called the “wine city”.
The Mou family manor at Qixia is a well-preserved Qing landowner’s estate and a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level. Yantai apples and Laiyang pears are famous, and seafood is plentiful.
