About
Zhuhai, in southern Guangdong on the west side of the Pearl River estuary, borders Macao to the south and has so many islands that it calls itself the “city of a hundred islands”. In 1980 Zhuhai became a Special Economic Zone with Shenzhen and others and grew from fishing villages into a seaside city; the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge runs from here to Hong Kong and Macao. See also Cities of China.
Lovers’ Road, running for tens of kilometres along the coast, is Zhuhai’s best-known seafront. In the north, Tangjiawan is an old town with the former home of the Republican premier Tang Shaoyi and the Gongle Garden he built. Offshore, Wailingding Island and Dong’ao Island have clear water and white sand; the “Lingding Sea” of Wen Tianxiang’s famous Southern Song line is these waters.

Travel tips
Getting there: Zhuhai Jinwan Airport is south-west of the city; intercity trains run to Guangzhou; the Gongbei crossing leads to Macao and the bridge to Hong Kong.
Sightseeing: Lovers’ Road and Tangjiawan are near the city; the islands are reached by boat from Xiangzhou and other piers and are best with an overnight stay.
