About
West Lake of Huizhou, Guangdong, is known for its “five lakes and six bridges”.
It is in the fourth batch of national parks of China (national scenic areas) named by the State Council in 2002.
Travel tips
Getting there: the lake is in the urban area of Huizhou, and buses or taxis from Huizhou station or Huizhou South station reach it. High-speed and intercity trains from Shenzhen and Guangzhou take roughly one to two hours.
Layout: the West Lake is made up of five lakes, Ping, Feng, E, Ling and Nan, joined by bridges, hence the name of Five Lakes and Six Bridges. Ping Lake is the largest, with most of the sights.
Route: you can walk round Ping Lake along the Su Causeway and past Gushan Hill. The Su Dongpo Shrine and the tomb of Zhaoyun are near Gushan, and relate to the poet's years in Huizhou.
Viewpoints: the Gushan area and the shore give views of the lake. The Sizhou Pagoda in the old city is another place to look over the whole lake.
Time: half a day covers the main sights around Ping Lake; seeing all five lakes takes a full day.
Season: spring and autumn are comfortable, summer is humid with rain, and winter is mild.
Where to stay: the lake lies inside the city, with hotels along the shore and in the centre.
Combining: West Lake and Mount Luofu are both in Huizhou. They can be done on two separate days, or the city first and the mountain after.
