Travel tips
Getting there: from Chengdu take a train to Qionglai, or a long-distance bus, about an hour and a half. From Qionglai a local bus or a hired car reaches the Tiantai Mountain area in about an hour. By car from Chengdu it is about two hours.
Layout: the scenic area lies southwest of Qionglai, with viewpoints and paths along the hillside. Yuxiao Peak is the highest summit. The rock is Danxia landform, with many red cliffs.
Route: most visitors go by road to the visitor centre partway up, then follow the paths uphill past cliffs, caves and viewing platforms, and come down the same way. There are steps both ways, but the distance is short.
Time: it can be done as a day trip from Chengdu, with half a day to a day on the hill.
Season: spring and autumn are the comfortable times. Summer is cooler than Chengdu but rainy; in winter there can be mist and wet paths.
Where to stay: guesthouses and small hotels stand on the hill and in Tiantaishan town at its foot; better hotels are in Qionglai city.
Nearby: Qionglai city has the old town of Pingle and the Linqiong old quarter, which fit into the same trip.
Caution: the paths have steps, so wear shoes with a good grip; wet rock is slippery.
