About
Mount Yiwulü, also Lüshan, in Beizhen County, Liaoning, belongs to the Songling range of the Yangshan system. It is the Northern Zhen of the Five Sacred Mountains and Five Zhen, the ten famous mountains, and with Qianshan and Changbai one of the three famous mountains of the north-east. Mostly granite, its main peak, Wanghai, is 866 m.
The Yiwulü national nature reserve has natural mixed conifer and broadleaf forest and is an important stopover for migrating swans and mandarin ducks.
The range runs north-east to south-west, about 45 km long and 14 km wide.
It is in the fourth batch of national parks of China (national scenic areas) named by the State Council in 2002.
Main sights
Xianling Mausoleum of the Liao: Yelü Bei, Prince of Dongdan, was buried in Mount Yiwulü, as was Emperor Shizong of Liao.
Twin Pagodas of Chongxing Temple: in the north-east of Beizhen city, two octagonal 13-storey solid brick pagodas 43 m apart and each over 40 m high, built in the late Liao; a national key cultural relic site.
Travel tips
Getting there: the park is in Beizhen, Liaoning. From Jinzhou (about 50 km) or Shenyang take a train or bus to Beizhen, then go on to the mountain by road. Sights in town, including the Beizhen Temple, can be visited on the way.
Beizhen Temple: in town, the temple where the Beizhen mountain, Yiwulv, was honoured by successive dynasties; the buildings are well preserved and make a good first stop before going up.
On the mountain: Yiwulv is large and its sights are scattered. They include Guanyin Pavilion, Daoist temples, and some caves and stone paths, mostly reached on foot along mountain roads and steps, or by park bus.
Time: the temple plus one or two mountain sights takes one day; for more, allow two days.
Season: spring and autumn are best, with rich autumn colour; summer is cool but paths are slippery after rain; winter is cold and the paths carry snow.
Birds: in spring and autumn migration, swans and mandarin ducks pass through the reserve, though whether you can see them closely varies by year.
Where to stay: Beizhen town is convenient; Jinzhou is another option.
Nearby: Xingcheng seaside lies to the south, and the Shenyang Imperial Palace and Qianshan to the east.
