About

Guifeng, also written Guifeng “Jade Peak”, lies on the southern edge of Yiyang County in north-east Jiangxi, 135 km² in all with a 25 km² core that looks from afar like a giant turtle. A Danxia landform, it is called the “showcase of Danxia”.

Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism meet here: the famous Ruixiang Temple, the Taoist Gexian Temple and the Confucian Dieshan Academy. Other sights are the Buddhist grottoes at Nanyan and Longmen Lake.

It is in the fifth batch of national parks of China (national scenic areas) named by the State Council in 2004.

Travel tips

Getting there: Yiyang station is on the Shanghai–Kunming high-speed line. Guifeng lies about 10 km southwest of Yiyang town; buses run from the station and the town to the scenic area, but not often, and taxis are an option.

Visiting: in the main area a park bus takes you in, a path then passes the danxia rock peaks, many named for the animals they resemble, and a boat brings you back across the lake to the visitor centre. Nanyan, a Buddhist temple carved into a danxia rock cave, is in a separate area; plan it as a separate visit.

Time: half a day to a day for the main area.

Season: spring and autumn are best; summer is hot, and the stone steps are slippery after rain.

Where to stay: Yiyang town has most of the accommodation; a day trip from Shangrao or Yingtan also works.

Caution: some paths run along cliff faces with steep, narrow steps; wear shoes with good grip.

Nearby: Longhushan and Sanqingshan are also in northeast Jiangxi and fit into the same trip.
