Yanmenguan stands on Yanmen Mountain in northern Dai County, one of the famous passes of the Great Wall and since the Warring States period a stronghold of the central plains against the north; an ancient saying ranks it first of the nine great passes. The surviving walled pass and gate towers are mostly Ming, restored.
