The Pipa Pavilion stands on the Yangtze bank northwest of central Jiujiang, Jiangxi, and takes its name from Bai Juyi's "Song of the Pipa". Demoted to a minor post in Jiangzhou, Bai was seeing off a friend by the river when he heard a former Chang'an singer, stranded here, play the pipa, and wrote: "We are both outcasts at the edge of the world; why must people who meet have known each other before?" The pavilion has been destroyed and rebuilt many times; the present one is a later reconstruction.
