Xi’an’s city wall was built in the Hongwu reign of the Ming on the base of the Tang imperial city of Chang’an. About 13.7 kilometers around, it is one of the most complete ancient city walls in China; the south gate, Yongning Gate, is the main entrance. Inside the wall east of the south gate, the Forest of Steles Museum holds inscribed stones of many periods, most famously steles written by great Tang calligraphers.
