Yuquan Temple stands at the foot of Yuquan Hill southwest of Dangyang, Hubei. The Sui-dynasty monk Zhiyi preached and founded a temple here, making it one of the ancestral temples of the Tiantai school; in the Tang, Shenxiu of the Northern school of Chan also taught here. With Lingyan Temple in Jinan, Guoqing Temple on Mount Tiantai and Qixia Temple in Nanjing it is counted among China’s four great temples. The thirteen-storey cast-iron pagoda in front of it, from the Northern Song, is one of the tallest iron pagodas surviving in China. The temple and pagoda are a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.
