About
Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2026 as a natural site.
Why it was inscribed
An example of ecological and biological processes; an important habitat for biodiversity and threatened species.
Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge, on the border of south-east Georgia and north Florida, protects the Okefenokee Swamp, one of the largest blackwater swamps in North America, with lakes, wet prairies, cypress forests and floating peat islands, home to American alligators, sandhill cranes and many other animals. Alternating droughts, wildfires and rains keep the peat forming and the swamp ecosystem working.
