Travel tips
Getting there: the park is in southwest Oregon. The nearest airports are Klamath Falls and Medford, about one to one and a half hours away by road; Portland is about five hours. You need a car.
Rim Drive: the road around the lake is about 33 miles with more than 30 overlooks, usually open in summer; driving the loop takes half a day or more.
Down to the water: the Cleetwood Cove Trail is the only way to the shore, about 1.1 miles each way with a drop of around 200 metres.
Wizard Island: a volcanic cinder cone in the lake, reachable only by boat tour.
Season: snowfall is very heavy; Rim Drive closes in winter and is usually fully open only from July. The best months are July to September.
Time: one day is enough to drive the loop.
Where to stay: Crater Lake Lodge on the rim has few rooms and needs early booking; Mazama Village has a campground and motel; Klamath Falls is the alternative.
Caution: the elevation is above 2,000 metres and summer nights are cool; carry snow chains in winter.
