About

The Zhalantun scenic area lies in the forests of the south-east Greater Khingan north-west of the city of Zhalantun in north-east Inner Mongolia, with forest, grassland and stream valleys; its sights are Xiushui and the Suspension Bridge Park.

Xiushui lies on the alluvial fan north of the city, where the Yalu River splits into countless islands, the “little Hangzhou of Inner Mongolia”. The writer Lao She praised it in a poem, setting its secluded hills, winding water and willows beside the scenery of Suzhou and Hangzhou.

It is in the fourth batch of national parks of China (national scenic areas) named by the State Council in 2002.

Travel tips

Getting there: Zhalantun is on the Binzhou railway, with trains from Harbin, Qiqihar and Hailar. Zhalantun has its own airport (Zhalantun Chinggis Khan); Qiqihar and Hulunbuir (Hailar) are alternatives.

Suspension Bridge Park: in the city, the suspension bridge over the Yalu River is a local landmark and can be reached on foot.

Xiushui: north of the city, where the Yalu River splits into many channels around small islands; good for a riverside walk or a boat ride.

Forest and grassland: to the northwest the Greater Khingan foothills meet grassland. It is a longer drive, best reached by car or a hired driver with an early start.

Time: the two town sights take half a day to a day; with the forest and grassland, plan two days.

Season: summer is cool and is the main season; autumn has good forest colour; winter is long and cold, with snow scenes.

Where to stay: staying in Zhalantun city is the most convenient.

Caution: mornings and evenings are cool even in summer, and mosquitoes can be a nuisance in the hills, so bring long sleeves.
