About

San Antonio Missions was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2015 as a cultural site.

Travel tips

Location: San Antonio is in south-central Texas. The four missions line the San Antonio River from north to south over about 6.5 miles (10 km) and form San Antonio Missions National Historical Park.

Getting there: San Antonio International Airport lies north of downtown. A car is the easiest way to reach the missions, with free parking at each and about 2.5 miles between neighbouring missions. VIA bus route 42 serves only Concepción and San José.

Main missions: from north to south, Mission Concepción, Mission San José, Mission San Juan and Mission Espada. San José has the park visitor centre.

River trail: about 10 miles of walking and cycling trail along the San Antonio River links the four missions and runs north to the Alamo. The Alamo is downtown and is a separate attraction, not part of the park. The trail has little shade, so carry water.

Ranch: Rancho de las Cabras is part of the World Heritage property, about 37 km south of the city, and is not on the usual visiting route.

Reservations: the national historical park has no entry reservation system. The missions remain active parish churches, so visits can be limited during services.

Time: the four missions along the river take a full day; two can be seen in half a day. With the Alamo and the River Walk, allow two days.

Season: spring and autumn are comfortable; summers are hot, often over 35 degrees Celsius in July and August.

Where to stay: the park has no campground. Hotels are in San Antonio, most concentrated around the River Walk.

Why it was inscribed

A witness to exchange between cultures.

The San Antonio Missions, in San Antonio, Texas, comprise five frontier missions along the San Antonio River (one of them the Alamo) and a ranch about 37 km to the south. Founded by Franciscan friars in the 18th century, with churches, dwellings, granaries, fields and acequias (irrigation channels), they were outposts of Spanish missionary and colonial effort on the North American frontier and show the blending of Spanish and local Indigenous cultures.
