Travel tips

Location: Taos Pueblo is in northern New Mexico, about 2 km north of the town of Taos. It is the home of the Pueblo people and is still lived in.

Getting there: The nearer large cities are Albuquerque and Santa Fe, both to the south, and most visitors drive. Public transport is very limited.

Route: From Santa Fe, the drive north can follow the Rio Grande Gorge, which is scenic.

Visiting: The pueblo is run by the tribe and is closed to visitors for some periods every year for religious activities; hours and notices are posted by the pueblo. Professional and commercial photography needs prior approval, residents must not be photographed without permission, and no photography is allowed in San Geronimo Chapel.

Etiquette: Do not enter private homes unless clearly marked as a shop, do not enter the cemetery (which holds the old church ruins), and do not enter the river, which is the community's drinking water. Follow 'Restricted Area' signs.

What to see: The multi-storey adobe house blocks, San Geronimo Chapel, the plaza and the dwellings on either side of the stream. Residents sell crafts and bread.

Festival: A feast for San Geronimo is held each autumn, with dances and a market, and is crowded.

Time: One to two hours in the pueblo. With Taos Plaza and the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge, allow a full day.

Season: Summer is warm, aspen colour peaks in autumn, winters are cold with snow, and spring is windy. Most lodging is in the town of Taos.
