Tianyi Pavilion and Moon Lake, Ningbo, Zhejiang 浙江宁波天一阁·月湖
Tianyi Pavilion, built by Fan Qin in the Ming, is China’s oldest surviving private library; its name, from the phrase “Heaven’s One begets Water”, was meant to guard it against fire. When the Siku Quanshu was compiled under the Qing, the Qianlong Emperor had the Wenyuan Pavilion and other imperial libraries built on its plan. Moon Lake, an old lake within Ningbo just east of the pavilion, has been a place where scholars lived and taught since the Song.
