South Lake, in the southeast of Jiaxing, was formerly called Mandarin Duck Lake. The Misty Rain Tower on its island was first built in the Five Dynasties; the Qianlong Emperor climbed it several times on his southern tours and had it copied at the Mountain Resort in Chengde. In 1921 the last day of the First National Congress of the Communist Party of China was held on a boat on the lake.
