Basum Tso lies in a gorge on the upper Ba River in eastern Gongbo'gyamda County, a lake dammed by a glacial terminal moraine, about 3,480 meters above sea level and some 14 kilometers long. On Tashi Island in the lake stands Tsozong Monastery of the Nyingma school.
